A Palm Springs afternoon appears perfectly composed: pink mountains, a turquoise pool, a record spinning, a man with his feet in the water—and a woman whose towering up-do has apparently acquired a small yellow bird.
But perfection is rarely the whole story.
Up-Do You Want is part glamour, part absurdity, and part scene from a film that never existed. The figures seem caught in the middle of something we’ve arrived too late to understand. Is this flirtation? Domestic theater? A very good party? She isn’t telling.
Painted in layers of luminous color, the work combines mid-century architecture, cinematic storytelling and a little strangeness to create a world that feels familiar but not quite real.
And at the center of it, she is completely herself—dramatic hair and all.
