The Turpentine Was Jealous

Comparison has a way of making us forget ourselves.

We look at someone else’s beauty, success, confidence, style, relationships, life—and without even realizing it, we begin measuring our own against theirs. But comparison is always a bad bargain. Other people are living from their own history, desires, timing, and instincts. Their life was never meant to be the blueprint for ours.

The Turpentine Was Jealous plays with that impulse through humor. Jealousy is absurd when you really look at it. Turpentine doesn’t need to become paint. Paint doesn’t need to become a flower. And you don’t need to become someone else.

Becoming more of yourself often means noticing where comparison has pulled your attention away from your own life—and bringing it back.

Because the more fully you become yourself, the less interesting it becomes to compete with somebody else.
